EZ SIPS: a Superior Alternative to Bio Foam Insulation
Bio foam insulation is the stuff that’s sprayed into wall cavities. It’s gaining in popularity, and becoming less toxic as production techniques advance. There’s even a castor oil version now! But there are drawbacks to bio foam insulation:
- At $5.00 to $8.00 per square foot to get you to R-25, bio foam insulation is expensive
- It doesn’t create a thermal break between exterior sheathing and inner wall covering
- It’s messy and tough to redo wiring or plumbing once it’s in the wall
EZ SIPS: the bio foam insulation alternative

Trades love EZ SIPS
EZ SIPS are super EZ for trades. The open interior wall consists of studs and plates protruding ½” from the foam. Along the sides of each stud and at 14” outlet height and 48” switch height you’ll see cuts in the foam. Simply pull out foam channels by hand, insert your wiring, plumbing or blocking, and replace the foam. EZ!
Closed cell bio foam insulation — typically urea formaldehyde or isocyanates like polyurethane — does a great job of insulating a home if it’s applied correctly, but it does not create the THERMAL BREAK that EZ SIPS do. Gases from bio foam insulation are usually toxic; manufacturers recommend that no one enter a house for 24 hours after it has been sprayed (!)
